Brushless DC is essentially an AC motor with permanent magnets operated by an electronic device that converts DC to AC. In model aircraft we vary the square wave AC frequency to vary the speed and power when using brushless electric drives. In a computer cooling fan the square wave is a fixed frequency. Stepper motors are similar but they usually have more poles to allow for smaller steps. A brushless DC motor used with a 3-phase stepper motor drive would have several degrees per step, while the stepper motor would have less than 1 degree per step. There are 3-phase stepper motors. I have used them. the stepper motor is designed to handle the current which results from having power applied without rotating the magnetic field That locks the motor in place. The brushless DC motor is designed to have counter emf limit current, thus it has to be allowed to rotate or if might draw excss current and burn up. I have no experience with the switch reluctance motors.
