First Aluminum does not rustIf it is brown or red rust, it is an iron based materialTouch a magnet to the metal, if it sticks, it is not Aluminum , rather an iron based materialMost likely it is sheet steel with a chrome finishIf that is the case, a very fine sand paper will remove the rustProgressively sand the area with fine grit in one direction, then a finer grit at a 90 degree angle until the scratches are goneThen repeat with finer grits until it is a 1000 grit or finer.
