Question:

1986 Pontiac Trans Am Firebird Transmission?

I have a ‘86 Trans Am Firebird and the Transmission is constantly leaking. It has been repaired four times by different shops but no one seems to get it right. Is there anything else I can check?

Answer:

It's hard to fix transmissions once they go bad, the other shops probably just kept messing around with it. I'd suggest going to a junkyard, and getting a 700r4 transmission (if it's an automatic) or a t5(standard) from another 8 cylinder camaro OR firebird, they're directly compatible. Don't get a transmission from a v6 firebird or camaro, because it won't link up with the engine.
It's been a while since on have worked on one. But where the dip stick tube goes into the transmission there is a rubber seal around it which many places tend to forget about. Not sure what these other repair shops have done but here are a few things to look for. Wipe down all the lines and the transmission pan. Let it set a few hours then look to see if you have any fluid leaking. if not start it up let it run a few minutes then check the areas again. That should narrow it down to where its coming from .
This wont fix any broken part, but try putting Lucas Transmission Fix its a fluid additive that stops leaks and is great for high mileage automatic transmissions. I have 150k+ miles on my 01 silverado It had a slow drip and I put this stuff in and it pretty much never leaks. The engine oil additive is awsome too! You can get it at napa auto parts stores.
