Question:

1991 Mustang Axle Dampers - Do you need them?!?

Hello, I was wondering if you need the Axle Dampers on a foxbody mustang? I have a 91 Mustang gt and i just bought new and wider wheels and when I put them on, the back wheels dont fit because it rubs against the axle dampers. So i was wondering if you could possibly spin the axle dampers around or just get rid of them as a whole. If so do i need to add anything for support if i do get rid ofthe axel damper? Thank youAlso i heard about putting spacers on, would that be a good or better option? Thanks you again every answer is valuable to me!

Answer:

On my '76 Cobra the alloy rims sat too far in (not enough backspace built into the wheels) so I bought 2 adapters off of Ebay. The adapters are the same bolt pattern, both where they bolt onto the hubs and where the wheels bolt to them. Now they fill the wheel arch nicely and look a lot better. Spacers with longer studs will do the same except the lug nuts tend to loosen themselves as you drive; better to use adapters.
I am running a 1996 GT rear axle in my 1986 Capri. I have 17x8 1999 Cobra wheels with 275/40/17 tires in back. No idiotic spacers. I still have the quad shocks in. Beleive me.they make a HUGE difference when you install new quad shocks. A lot of the drivetrain slop and jolting is gone at slow or crawl speeds.
Only way you can remove them and not cause any problems is if you#x27;re gonna install an after market set of upper control arms with polyurethane bushings.Otherwise the axle housing is gonna twist on hard acceleration.I#x27;m assuming you#x27;re referring to the quad shocks too,not the vertical mounted shocks, which you definitely shouldn#x27;t remove for any reason.Yes its alright to use spacers. If the spacer is the type that already includes its own wheel studs,it will work fine.If its the spacer that#x27;s nothing more than a piece of aluminium with holes cut out of it,you might have to install longer studs on the axle, depending on how wide the spacer is.New upper and lower control arms will increase your handling and improve take off tremendously.Go for it dude
