Question:

1997 Civic-Timing belt/Water Pump?

I had my timing belt replaced @ 80k (now have 138k) and was told by new mechanic that the water pump was not replaced then. Do I need to have pump replaced? What will happen if I don't? Thx

Answer:

Pump is leaking if you see water, other than A/C under car or coolant is constantly getting low. If water pump goes car will over heat and can leave you stranded. If you are not going to keep car for more than a year don't worry about either unless pump is bad. If pump is bad just change the pump. No need to pay for timing belt if your not going to keep car. If Mech. scared you get a second opinion or take your Dad with you because some people will try and take advantage of females about cars, and I did say some not all.
Don't worry yourself over it. Just keep on driving it and sell it as you have planned.
well is it leaking now it does if its not leaking then its fine and dont need to replace it if its working right ... most people replace them since they need to come off while timing belt is replace less work to get it then but if its not leaking now no real reason to replace it unles you got money you dont need and just want to fix things thats not broken.. sorry don tneed one if its working but if its leaking sure replace it
water pump is usually replaced with the timing belt since it is easiest to get to when you are doing the timing belt. your water pump may go out on you tomorrow or last for another 300k miles, who knows. but with it not having been changed, you are still riding on a pump with 138k on it. lots of miles on that impeller. if it lasts, just have it changed next timing belt...which I would do @ around 160k miles ~ 80k is about right for a timing belt to last. civic water pumps are cheap...as are the timing belts.
Since the water-pump must be removed to gain access to the timing belt it's a generally approved practice to replace it when the belt is replaced. In your case I wouldn't worry one bit if you've kept your cooling system serviced regularly. Water-pumps are quick and easy to replace at any time. If it would make you rest any easier, replace the pump the next time you change the timing belt.
