Question:

2000 Subaru outback looking for an air intake?

I want to get a custom air intake for my outback with the 2.5, there‘s so many to choose from. Any suggestions would be great.

Answer:

No gains in performance will be realized by your model with an intake modification, unless it is ram air. If you look at your stock intake you will notice it is already cool and fresh air intake from the factory, and no realistic gains will be appreciated by mods.
Do you know if your car is MAF or MAP? If MAF, I wouldn't mess with the intake, to be honest, or if you do, make sure it is secured, as vibration can kill an MAF sensor and they are not cheap to replace. Also, the reusable filters that use a spray are bad for MAF sensors, so keep that in mind. The aftermarket kits that eliminate the plastic box behind the throttle body typically free up some airflow, but usually rob you of some bottom end torque, while freeing up a little more at the top end. Honestly, most of the cold air intake systems at a given price range work about the same--it's all in what you want to spend. Unless you are using a setup that pulls air from the fender well or front of the car, it would be wise to put a heat shield to block out some engine bay heat from the intake filter. You might also want to consider putting on a pair of phenolic intake manifold spacers.
