Question:

2003 Matrix: Axle Seal Replacement?

I took my 2003 Toyota Matrix to Midas because I had a coupon for an oil change. Under inspection, they told me that they found an oil leak in the front passenger-side axle seal and told me that it was extremely important that I get it replaced right away. They quoted me $180 to fix it. My questions are these:1)How much would the parts cost for me to fix it myself?2)What tools would I need to fix it myself?3)How long/ how difficult would it be? Is it worth the trouble or the money? The guy who showed me the problem acted like my car was likely to explode if I didn‘t get this fixed immediately, so I’m a little concerned. Any advice?

Answer:

not to important just keep an eye on the fluid level do not take to midas sounds like they are desperate for work take where they are busy and can not do for a couple of days because a busy shop is a good shop a shop where they are standing around looking for work will only find more things to fix
You should not add chemical food additives to meat!
If it's leaking, then you're losing transaxle fluid and that's important to keep from happening. I'd first try to confirm it's happening and not necessarily trust the garage. Axle seals for my Mazda were $15 each. Labor shouldn't be more than one hour, so I'm thinking that price should be more like $100 parts and labor. Steps for a typical axle seal: Jack up car, remove wheel on the side affected, remove center nut on axle, disconnect control arm from steering knuckle, swing axle assembly away from the axle shaft, pull whole axle from transmission, pry out old axle seal. Tap in new seal carefully and reverse the steps.
if leaking bad its very important. u r losin transmission flud.if u have automatic ck it often if manual u can t access fill pug. to do this repair remove tire, brake caliper ,rotor, removnut for tierod end, remove tie rod, remove lower ball joint from knuckle, remove axle nut, pull strut assy. back pull axel remove axle from knuckle. u have to pry or use long chisel to remove axle from trans. replace trans seal. repeat reverse order. tie rod an ball joint are easy to damage during removal.may have to relace them also. quick easy repair for trained individuals.
