Question:

A car hoist is filled with oil. Why would it be different to use if it were full of air?

Okaaay, this is for my grade 8 science class. We're learning about fluids, and this is one of the questions for the test tomorrow. The teacher gave us the answer sheet but it got cut off at the side so you can't read it properly. Anyone know the answer? PLEASE HELP, I NEED TO PASS :(:(:(

Answer:

omg... i have a test tomorrow too and im in grade 8
filled with oil one can easily know of a leak happening, also there is more resistance and much more easier to manage , with air a split may occur causing devastating damage
Air compresses and fluids don't, and mechanics don't want the car hoist bouncing up and down while they're working on it. Using oil is considered more reliable as well.
A system that is filled with air is pneumatic, as a system that is filled with a fluid (oil) is hydraulic. If air is used in a hydraulic system (the hoist) it will not operate properly. Air will compress where oils will not.
