We have used one and no, I'm not worried about it starting a fire. Make sure all the wires are in good shape (not broken or frayed) and everything will be fine and cozy warm.
Put some toothpaste on a perfectly flat surface and rub the suction cup in a circular pattern for a few minutes - adding a few drops of water if the paste dries out.
