I just got a new road bike recently (Specialized Allez 2010). Now I am hearing a gritty noise when I turn the crank. I think it is coming from the bottom bracket. How can I get in there and clean it? Is this included in a bike tune-up? My bike shop gives new owners a complimentary tune-up after 30 days.
Get it back to the bike shop now! This would definitely fall under a warranty problem. Demand that they fix it NOW!
Sounds like the bearings in your bottom bracket are away with it. Since it's a new bike and covered by warranty they should replace it. Unless you have contravened the terms of normal use which is unlikely. Replacement due to defective manufacturing is hopefully more likely. You haven't tried to adjust the cranks or anything yourself, have you. Has it taken a bad knock at any time? Should be replaced under warranty then.
there is a good chance that you've shattered a bearing, or maybe its just clogged up with dirt. If you mention it to the person doing the tune-up im sure they'd check it out for you :)
