Question:

how many square yards do i need of carpet

A homeowner wants to carpet three rooms that measure 12 ft × 12 ft, 10 ft × 14 ft, and 21 ft × 20 ft. How many square yards of carpet should be ordered, rounded to the nearest tenth.

Answer:

234.7 square yards of carpet. Here's how I got it: 12 ft x 12 ft = 144 sq ft. 10 ft x 14 ft = 140 sq ft. 21 ft x 20 ft = 420 sq ft 144 + 140 + 420 = 704 sq ft / 3 = 234.66 sq yards, which rounds up to 234.7.
Multiply the measurements of each room by each other and then divide by 3. You are looking for square yardage so you have to get the square amount and then convert it to yards. In this case it is: (12 feet * 12 feet =144 sq feet) / 3 = 48 square yards (21 feet *20 feet =420 sq feet) / 3 = 140 square yards (10 feet x14 feet = 140 sq feet) / 3 = 46.7 square yards 234.7 square yards
12 X 26 FT
10x14 and 12x12 will work for those 2 rooms, if you buy 12 foot carpet and roll it out 12 and 14'. but the 21x20 room will require at least 2pcs. of 12' carpet to only have 1 seam(12x40), if you roll it out the 20' wall. the nap of the carpet has to run the same direction in both pieces. it's about 85yds total.(yes, 9s.f. in a sq. yd.) if you use 15' carpet, you would be wasting on the other 2 rooms. if there is a pattern match, you have to also add that to the 40'. best bet is to take your measurements to your carpet dealer and have them figure the best use of the carpet. Hope that helps
They would average 14 hands each.
