Question:

A plumber has quoted me ?2500 for a new boiler, but I have just seen 1 in b&Q for ?400. what's the difference?

A plumber has quoted me ?2500 for a new boiler, but I have just seen a boiler in BQ for ?400. what's the difference?Surely it can't cost ?2100 for installation? All I need is the old combi boiler taking out and a new one put in.

Answer:

He is marking up the boiler to make a profit, adding his labor (which is most likely very high), adding his insurance and fee to the overall material and labor pricing, and is adding a fee for having to deliver the new boiler, and possibly dispose of your old boiler. He's just trying to make a living by getting as much money out of you as he can. You can thumbs down me all you want. I am a project manager for a commercial construction company and I know how pricing works. It is not as basic of a job as it seems to you, just pull this out and put this in, done, in your dreams. If it is so cheap and easy, tell the asker to do it himself. The plumber has to add in his cost of doing business into the price. If it seems high, get more pricing. Geez!
Ok here goes, ?2500 - the Vat= ?326.09 =?2173.91- cost of quality materials ?1000= ?1173.91- say in total costs of estimating, ordering, registration fee's, use of tools equipment (power flusher, drills, gas analyser, transport, insurance), labour 2 days for suitably qualified engineer + mate, environmental disposal of removed items, Guarantee =?1173.09. in all ?2500 is not far out for a Professional installation. Or get some numpty to fit a piece of crap from BQ (they are cheap for a reason), that you will have to replace in 5yrs. Hope this helps:):):)
If there are no changes i.e. resiting boiler this seems excessive. We paid ?1,200 five years ago for a replacement. It was not a combi boiler though (as our old one wasn't) - perhaps they are a bit more expensive. Our replacement boiler was a Potterton by the way, not a B Q so would have cost more.
The difference is purely the source. The plumber wants to part you from as much of your money as he can. That's an integral part of his job! BQ sell a lot of boilers due to the competitive price. The BQ boiler is manufactured by Ravenheat who are a well established British firm. There is also a three year guarantee on these boilers. If you or an acquaintance is 60 or over, you can get 10% off of Wednesdays! I would ring around at least half a dozen CORGI registered installers to get an install only quote. When you get a sensible quote, ask for it in writing and make sure nothing is omitted.
dont get a boiler from bq.there cheap boilers and are problematic and usually unreliable.its better to pay more and get a much better boiler in the long run. they are over charging there, for a straight swap it should be a lot less, but pay a bit more for a quality boiler
