Question:

A quiet cold air intake?

I know there‘s a lot of controversy with cold air intakes on cars and I‘d just like to see for myself. I own a 2002 Toyota Solara V6 and I‘m looking for some more efficiency as well as whatever power (if any) a CAI gives you. I don‘t want a loud one simply because I don‘t want to look like a ricer. Is there anything out there besides my factory air box that will keep things quiet?

Answer:

A factory air intake is quiet because it's tuned. A CAI isn't and that's why they're loud. Do what you will, just realize that they're a total waste of money. The only increase in HP comes when the throttle plate is in the fully open position at or near red line. At less throttle, the throttle plate itself becomes the biggest obstruction in the intake. So it doens't matter how much air you let in, the partially closed throttle plate will stop it.
you already have a cold air intake on your car. the one that was engineered to work best on your car from toyota. Also , a question for you . Where is all this cold air going to come from ? All you can get is ambient air that is what ever the air temperature is that day. So where where this cold air come from ?. Pump your tires up to maximum air pressure so they roll easier will give better mpg.
Toyota recommends the use of 91 or higher octane fuel in your car for improved peformance . The 91 will also give you more mpg's. this only works with the v6 motor like you said you have. I would highly suggest using 91 or higher if u want more peformance and mpg's. check your owners manual if you want to be sure. A CAI doesn't do much for power. The filter is getting air in the engine bay and that air is hot due to the heat off the motor. So where does this 'cold air' come from? It's doesn't. Unless you custom make an intake to run air from OUTSIDE the car. That air will more more cool then under the hood.
