I have never heard of a backwater valve. What kind of car is this? We need Year, Make and Model Can you be more specific.

A backwater valve is basically a check valve that lets water flow in one direction only, away fom your system, and prohibits any other accumulation from entering into your system, like flood water etc. Yes they work very well unless they get full of junk and stuck open.
