Question:

About keyboards on laptops?

*In advance: I apologize if the question is confusing*Is it possible to use a different keyboard type on an existing keyboard, like installing another program for another keyboard and that over-riding the current, different keyboard, could I do that without disabling the keyboard completely?Or is it more efficient to use a different keyboard that connects by USB instead- do they come with a program for the keyboard? If so, would that program change my computer's keyboard settings (I hope)?

Answer:

Today, the majority of standard computer keyboards will be automatically detected and installed by the computer operating systems. Computer keyboards using USB, Firewire, or other distinctive interfaces or keyboards that have special function keys may require additional software and drivers to work or to have the ability to utilize the special function keys. It is recommended you visit the keyboard manufacturer's web page to obtain the software or driver for your keyboard.
If you mean a different layout like DVORAK, yes it is possible, go to control panel/system preferences and go to keyboard settings, theres a layout option.
You can use an external keyboard on a laptop, yes. You can also use an on screen keyboard too. You can switch between any keyboards you want to use as well. Just make sure any external keyboard you use is usb and wireless.
The letters on the keyboard have nothing to do with the signal that actually gets sent to the computer. There's a file called a key map that actually tells the computer what letter to show based on what button you pressed. Change the key map, and you suddenly have a different keyboard layout. Your operating system should have support for switching key mappings built-in. No need to even download another program.
kinda depends on the keyboard, but is unlikely w/o more info. better off using a bluetooth or usb keyboard if you need extra functionality. it seems to me you're asking about specialty keys like many laptops have specifically for media, email/web, volume, etc. many of those functions are not actually part of the keyboard and are actually a separate panel on the surface of the laptop. yet still, you cannot simply change keyboards. however, you could also be asking about changing the keyboard function like cyrillic or east asian languages or type fonts, which is simple w/ the region settings in control panel. but w/o a better worded question/more info, you can't really expect very good answers here
