Question:

Acoustic Guitar Strings? Nylon vs. steel?

I'm getting new strings on my dad's old acoustic guitar so I can learn how to play it and I'm wondering if I should get nylon or steel strings. Are there any major differences between the two aside from the nylon strings being easier on your fingers? Like do the Nylon strings sound different?

Answer:

Well there definitely is a difference in sound. It kind of depends on what type of music you're getting into. If you what to play more pop/rock songs I'd go with steel. But for classical guitar or folk music, go with the nylon.
If it's a classic guitar, then you should get nylon strings, because you can't use steel strings on a classic guitar, and you can't use nylon strings on an acoustic guitar , I would suggest that you buy a classic guitar, because it's really good for beginners.
Listen to jwent You do NOT want to put steel strings on a nylon string guitar it will pull up the bridge, and top of the guitar, and break the plastic tuners that can't handle the extra tension You can put nylon a steel string guitar, but it won't sound like a classic guitar, because the steel string guitar has the extra bracing, to handle the tension of the steel strings, won't hurt anything, just won't sound as good If you want to soften the feel and sound of a steel string guitar, another option is silk n steel
Steel strings sound much better as in brightness and tone. Nylon strings sound dull and don't hold tune well but are easier to press. You need to build calouses on your finger tips and using steel will do this, just take it easy until they form and stop when they start hurting moderately. When you put new strings on a guitar, it's very good to break them in by pulling on them from the neck upwards to stretch them out. If you don't, you will need to tune them much until they wear themselves in. Good luck and make some sweet music !!
