To be honest, this work is a pain in the ***. It is pretty easy, just you are in tight spaces and will get cut a lot on your arms. Most shops will do it pretty reasonably (0.7 hours) and at the most 30$ part from autozone (dont buy from dealer, lol) Not sure if your cylinder is bad or the actuator. Usually key cylinder only goes bad if your car has been broken into. Does it lock/unlock/open from the inside? Most issues I see with doors involve disconnected rods, usually from broken plastic retaining clips. Take the door panel off. See whats going on in there. Compare to passenger side operation, if you what. Yeah so can try, as your friend did, clean moving parts behind door panel with break cleaner then spray white lithium grease and try to operate repeatedly. Good luck.
