Question:

AMD Bulldozer FX-8 3.60Ghz or Intel i5 3570K 3.40GHz?

Hoping to build my first PC at some point soon, can anyone please tell me which of the above processors would be more powerful/better. I will be mostly using fairly simple applications, but I will be doing some gaming so which would you go for? thanks

Answer:

I would go for the Intel i5, definitely. This generation, Intel has wiped the board with AMD. However, if you are going for fairly simple applications, and even gaming, you don't need the 3rd generation. I recommend going for the Intel i5 2500K. It is just one generation below, however it will save you money and also it reportedly has less heat output that the 3rd gen. The i5 2500K can also be overclocked.
follow Intel and the i5-3570k, getting an AMD motherboard and the 8150 can be a downgrade..... The 8350 Vishera CPU on the different hand is a demanding call to make in case you interest and multitask/ video encode etc....... seeing as its in basic terms Gaming...... bypass Intel.
get the the 3570k, its not much more expensive than the 2500k but is better by about 20%. it also uses less power consumption. There is only one drawback to the new ivy bridge cpu's in that it runs extremely hot and therefore does not overclock as high as sandy bridge. However a 4.8ghz clock speed is easily achievable with a water cooling and with a decent air cooler about 4.5ghz. however ivy bridge even though it doesnt overclock as much its still about 20% faster. As in reference to your question, the 3570k will be about 40-50% better than the fx-8 core cpu in gaming and every other aspect! however i recommend that you get a good z77 motherboard with it e.g. gigabyte ud5h or asus gene.
INTEL, ALWAYS!
