Question:

Any ideas on how to come up with cheap chair covers?

My wedding is this saturday, we are having the reception at the american legion and their chairs are all different colors and very ugly. We were planning on renting chair covers till today my mom said we cant afford it anymore. Any ideas on what I could do to make these chairs look better?

Answer:

Honey, unfortunately, renting chair covers WAS your cheapest option, depending on what you were looking at. Going out and buying material, no matter WHAT material, is going to be expensive and incredibly time consuming. I don't know what kind of time you have, but considering your wedding is in 5 days, I would either look at their lowest price chair cover or talk to the banquet hall about their options. Another option that I saw at a bridal show that I went to recently was tying a band of tulle around the back of a chair and securing it with a single silk flower (hot glued with a some kind of pin to secure everything) and letting the rest of the tulle hang down kind of like a bow, but without the actual bow. Upon closer examination I could see that it could be replicated rather inexpensively and you could certainly arrange the tulle to cover more of the chair and it would detract from the tackiness of the chair. I just don't think you will be able to do a full on chair cover in this short amount of time. Good luck honey!
Not knowing exactely what the chairs look like, maybe... try placing a white pillow case or a solid color one (your chosen colors will be great) over the back of them. It would provide more of a uniform yet custom look. Congratulations on your nuptials and new life!
Tulle is inexpensive can to tied over chairs with ribbon to match your colors. Easy to do inexpensive. Good luck! Tulle is 108 X 60 at our Fabric House it is $1.09 a yard. No outer space about 4 miles from my house. All my children neices nephews are married I have handled most of their receptions. I have found tons of ways to help my siblings save money in decorating. You can leave it alone keep same chairs apart, so it seems on purpose.
Dear, it's a little late to be thinking of this now. Frankly, there isn't much you can do at this late date, and if your mom cannot afford any more, as you say, then just get married, have the reception, and move on. Really, no one will be paying much attention to the chairs and years from now what they looked like will NOT even be remembered. TO the person who suggested you run out to a fabric store and buy tulle and ribbons (stating this was INexpensive), she must be from outer space because it would cost you a FORTUNE! Just go with the chairs as they are and relax.
