Question:

any tips on changing a tire on a belt drive motorcycle?

93 kawasaki vulcan 500 belt drive, should i attempt changing the rear tire myself? i‘m pretty good at figuring things out, but, this looks a little involved, getting timing belt, and other things, back on right.any suggestions, (serious ones) would be most appreciated

Answer:

there is nothong to time, its a final drive belt. Easy job get a shop manual. With the manual and common sense it will not be hard. Remove the wheel and just have a shop put the new tire and balance it on the wheel. Then simply put it on the bike yourself.
It's not that involved. I'm not sure what you mean by timing belt. There is no timing in relation to the belt drive. The most important things are making sure the wheel is straight and the tension on the belt is right when you install the wheel. I suggest you get a service manual and a belt tension gauge to make sure your doing it right. If you do it wrong you can cause the belt to break. Then your looking at a much more serious tear down to repair it.
A shop manual is your best friend or source of advice. There are only two major differences between a belt and a chain - The belt requires a specific tension and will not tolerate any mis-alignment. A tension gage is required, they cannot be set by eye or feel. I find it well worth the money to pull my own wheels and have a shop change the tires. It's easier, and faster. It saves on busted knuckles and bandaids. Added plus - they get spin balanced. I still get the satisfaction of doing some of the work on my ride. To do it all yourself, you will need not only the right wrenches but a set of tire irons (screwdrivers cut things up) and a decent wheel stand. Don't forget the assortment of wheel weights.
I'm not 100% sure but i think you can just pull it down.
