Answer:

To make sure that the Ammo lines up strait in the clipso you don't get a miss Fed and jam your gun when you fire it also to make sure there are bullets in the magazinesoldiers now days are trained to pick up empty magazines and brass so the enemy cant tell you were there and a empty magazine can also be used as a destruction when you throw it on the ground.
Because they saw it in a movie and it looks coolSupposed to seat all the ammo to the rear of the mag, in actuality all it does is break the welds and destroy the magazineWhen you put the rounds in the magazine they should already be mostly in line, and those that aren't will not create a misfeedWelds are on the back and they are not just pressed togetherThat marine has obviously not been an armorer long if hes never seen one breakYes the first round can be pushed forward some which would make the mag not load, however banging it on your head will not push it back as its got too much tension from the rounds below pushing it onto the feeding claws of the magPushing it back with your fingers is effective without looking like a deedeedee
whilst AR form of magazine is loaded the rounds won't be in the final placeThe rounds could all have the rim of the around touch the back area of the magazinewhilst they hit it on there helmets or palms or the different troublesome floor it pushes the rounds to the back of the magazinewhilst they do this they continually hit the back of the magazine on somethingThis action will supply up the magazine and enable the rounds slide to the back of the magazine.
Hello 'fu22ybunny' First off: This is good HOLLYWOOD movie effectsIt shows an element of 'determination' and makes a movie more exciting and keeps the viewer on his toes paying attentionBut, I don't really know if this is necessary today as I have not fired a weapon since the 1970sWhen I was qualifying on the rifle after loading up my rounds in the magazine I didn't have to hit the magazine on anythingBesides, we didn't wear any metal combat helmets when we fired for qualificationEven in basic training when I fired for qualification we just loaded up the magazine and inserted it into the rifleThe original purpose was to make sure that all the bullets (rounds) were lined up and not off-line so that the bullet would not feed into the rifle - thus a rifle jam There is a compressed spring in the rifle magazine that gets pushed down as we load up our individual bullets (rounds) into the magazineIf you load up 15 rounds then the spring gets compressed to the bottom and as your fired round shell casing gets ejected out of the rifle the spring pushes up the waiting round in the magazine into the chamberIF the waiting round is not lined up then it will not feed into the rifle and there will be a jamThis is not a good thing because then an enemy has the added time to shot you because you can not shot back until you are able to 'clear' your weaponAnd, that might be too lateMaybe some folks who are currently in the military and use weapons and fire all the time can answer if they need to hit their magazines on their metal helmet or is this just a nice thing for movies to show for effectBe wellLarry Smith SMSgt, USAF (Ret.)
