Question:

Are All Cold Air Intakes Legal To Have?

i was wondering if cold air intakes legal to install on a car and are they smog legal?

Answer:

actually that is not the problem cold air intakes are crap, they have been proven not to do what the manufacturer claims, many that claim to bolt on do not, and have no place to screw in sensors or the other things needed to keep your car running right. Not only that there are questions on here every week from people who have tried them and had major problems, everything from check engine lights to computer malfunctions, and in some cases engines have been severely damaged or ruined. A faulty code can cause your computer to lean out your engine, this can actually burn a hole in a piston. These cold air intakes may make a small amount of power, at WOT OR WIDE OPEN THROTTLE do you plan to run around town with your extra 2.4 horsepower at wide open throttle to save gas? not me. I suggest before wasting money on fake plastic looking sewerpipe with an air filter stuck to it please ask your mechanic, after all he is the guy you are going to if your computer malfunctions anyway, and hmm if cai were so great, maybe the mechanic will warranty the installation? (dont think so) power chips, are another waste of time, modern new high performance cars, and many diesel trucks have power programmers for different driving styles, but older cars especially pre 2000 have few sensors, and limited parameters to change if any.GM has voided warranties on many cars who installed aftermarket chips after a rash of transmission failures, other companies will follow suit, and from the beginning starting in 93 or so, diesel trucks that had chips installed would occasionally explode. and that has been an ongoing problem, both in the diesels and high performance markets. Save your money, a chip, and a CAI can be over 600 bucks, that is a lot of gas money.
Yes it can dry clean anything. It's a great bargain; probably better than taking it to the cleaners.
Any that say CARB exempt (California Air Resources Board). KN, Volant, AE, and Spectre for starters, check out some websites like Jegs, or just google cold air intakes to check prices and for performance specs, as long as it specifies CARB exempt you'll be good.
Yes in certain states. In California (Where im at) If it passes smog emissions and has a CARB sticker then it's legal. Normal Cold Air Intakes from legit brands such as AEM, Injen, KN in the packages you buy from them sometimes (Usually not from 3rd partys) comes with a CARB sticker you can stick on to your intake and when smog comes, the tester sees it and you don't fail the visual portion of the test ) Hope this helps
For the best answers, search on this site shorturl.im/axNUP Some guys look good with a little scruff but most look terrible with it. Personally I like guys who are clean shaven.
