Question:

Are hamster wheels safe?

Like are the wheels you get at PetSmart safe for your hamster to run on? If so, like plastic ones or wood or what??

Answer:

Hamster wheels can be safe, but I'd go for a solid plastic one rather than a wooden one or a metal one with open spaces. Hamsters' legs can get trapped in the metal ones while they're running, and the wood ones will be more tempting to chew and, at a guess, I'd say they're more likely to get bacteria in them seeing as they'll absorb moisture in the cage. The plastic one will still be chewable, but won't absorb all the nasties that come in the hamsters' urine and won't get their feet trapped.
Please be safe and get the plastic wheels! It really depends on the hamster. If they are dwarf, please get PLASTIC. If they are normal size, the wheel choice doesn't matter. This is what happened to me. I have a dwarf hamster. Apparently, what happened to it was she got her leg stuck on the wheel. It is a metal wheel by the way. Her leg got broken becuase of it. The plastic one won't do much harm and they are safe for your pet to use! I hope this helps you!
