Question:

Are the shafts on my clubs graphite or steel....?

I have a set of Ben Hogan Apex Plus Forged Irons, how can i figure out if the shafts are steel or graphite?

Answer:

Steel shafts should have a shaft band just below the grip area on the shaft....Graphite should have a label that looks like it is a Decal that is readable on the shaft. If still confused take to any good golf store...they will be able to Identify the shaft material in no time at all
Most steel shafts are stepped, meaning there will be a series of ridges that run down the lengeth of the shaft every few inches. Also, take a piece of metal and tap the shaft with it. If it makes a ping type of sound, its metal. If it makes a clunk sound, its graphite. Or, look out the window and ask the first person you see walking by. Unless they are younger that 10 years old, they should be able to tell you pretty easily.
Hold one club in each hand and hit them together like swords fighting, putting the impact point about midway down each shaft, and listen to the sound. If it's more of a clank sound, it's steel, and more of a click sound, it's graphite.
Steel will look like polished steel. And Graphite or CF will be painted or clear over the black CF fibers. Basically - if it looks like steel it is. You could look up you clubs on google also. Many times the shafts have the material, stiffness and other info printed right on them.
