Question:

are rare earth elements metals?

Are they still metal?

Answer:

Generally from softest to heaviest: Heavy Metal (stuff like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Motorhead) (sometimes softer and sometimes heavier than thrash metal) Progressive Metal (Dream Theater, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Tool, Queensyrche, Mastodon, Fates Warning, Symphony X, Meshuggah, Liquid Tension Experiment Thrash Metal (stuff like The Big 4: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, Exodus, Testament) Black Metal (stuff like Venom, Bathory, Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Emperor) Death Metal (stuff like Obituary, Carcass, Deicide, Sepultura, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Death, Nile, Amon Amarth, Necrophagist, Cynic, Atheist) Of course there are more crazy subgenres of these subgenres of metal such as grindcore, metalcore, porngrind, death n' roll, thrashcore, glam metal, power metal, speed metal, nu metal, melodic death metal, technical death metal, funk metal, rap metal, viking metal, folk metal, war metal, djent, drone metal, doom metal, deathgrind, gothic metal, alternative metal, christian metal, neo-classical metal, stoner metal, symphonic metal, etc...
Heavy Power Thrash Death Black. My opinion though. Some people find death heavier but black metal bands are heavier to me.
I'd have probably included a subgenre even ffuffier than heavy metal, I'd call it Melodic Metal and include bands such as Impelliteri, TNT, Takara, Jeff Scott Soto, Jorn Lande. I personally think Power Metal deserves its own genre just because of the scope of it. There are so many bands that fall within that group like Blind Guardian, Edguy, Sonata Arctica, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Iced Earth. Scott definately knows his metal though and can't disagree with his assessment of the subgenres of metal.
