Question:

Area rug with mold on it. How can I clean it?

We found a really nice area rug in a storage but it somehow got wet and moldy, can it be cleaned? I have it laid out outside to completely dry out, would a carpet shampooer clean it, is there anything special I should use?

Answer:

1. remove the excess moisture by running a wet/dry vacuum over the problem spots. 2. sprinkle some powder laundry detergent onto the infected spots. 3. clean the problem area with a mixture of liquid laundry detergent and water using a clean towel. 4. wipe clean with a damp clean towel
You should look in the yellow pages for your area for a rug cleaning company that does area rugs. I know of a couple of places like this in San Diego, where you bring in the area rug (any size, really), and they hang it up on a big scaffold and clean it with pressure washers. I don't know how much it costs, but they always seem to be busy. So, it can't be that expensive.
If small, I'd launder it at home, putting in a bit of oxyclean with the detergent. If largge, I'd take it to a do it yourself car wash (spray wand) and spend a dollar. Pressure helps.
