Question:

Aufbau principle question?

Which one of the following has an electron configuration that deviates from that predicted by the Aufbau principle?A. Ag B. Zn C. Fe D. Mn E. SiI had no idea what the answer was so i googled it, and the only exceptions that came up for the aufbau principle were Chromium‘s and Copper‘ electron configuration. My answer sheet says it‘s Silver. Can someone explain to me why?

Answer:

Ag has an electron configuration of: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 5s1 4d10. Notice that one of the electrons from 5s went into the 4d orbitals. It is more stable for the d orbitals which are more complex than the s orbital, to be half filled or completely filled than partially filled. If the electron configuration were to be: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 5s2 4d9, then the 4d orbitals would be partially filled and would be less stable but by moving a 5s electron to the 4d, the 4d becomes completely filled and is more stable. This way the 5s is half-filled which is somewhat stable but less complex than the 4d and the 4d is completely filled and is very stable. Hope that helps!
During a relationship, you sleep with your partner at no time at all. Once you give away the cake, then what is there to look forward to.
I agree with Andrea M. Wait till marriage.
