Question:

Axle ontop of leaf springs?

I have a 1950 ford F-1 and I want to lower it. Is it safe to bolt the axle ontop of the leaf springs or should I get a lowered axle for 400 bucks?

Answer:

it is a common practice to do just what you are asking about.it would be wise to use new u bolts.
It is safe to bolt it on top of the axel. I have seen that done before.
It is quite safe, the spring perches will need to be taken off the top of the axle housing and welded on the bottom. Check the pinion angle, so the perches will be put on the housing in the proper location. This will give you about a 4 inch drop. On the front, the springs can be cut down. After its back together, get it aligned. On the rear you can get more drop by getting springs with less arch. Unless your a good welder, have the welding done by an expert welder. Remimber the pinion angle if it's off, your rear u joint will go out.
