Question:

Babies iron intake.?

My 9 month old daughter has been throwing up since about a month old. Its not normal baby spit up, its much more. But its not projectile, so her doctor says she‘ll grow out of it. I‘m very concerned, because in a day, total, she‘ll throw up about a whole bottles worth (8oz.), if not more. She‘s been one acid reflux meds, and has tried many formulas. She‘s been on Enfamil lipil A.R. w/iron. I‘m curious uld her body be making enough iron, to where formulas with iron could cause her to throw up? It‘s very fustrating as a mother, seeing your baby vomiting soo much.

Answer:

i have the same problem, often doctors think that mothers over exaggerate, and so do other mothers because they have never seen a child throw up that much until you spend time with them and then they are like, have you seen a doctor about that. i want to say to them, NO i thought it was normal and i love that he throws up that much. so i know this sounds gross, but this is what i did to get the point across. i kept an empty bottle with me everywhere i went and when my son would start to through up i would catch as much of the vomit as i could. it turned out that he was throwing up at least 6 OZ's a day and that was only what i caught, after that the doctor paid more attention, unfortunately it is a matter of trial and error with him and he is too young to get surgery yet. i don't know about the iron but it's worth a shot, i would talk to your doctor and also get a second opinion. one doctor gave my son metaclopramide ( originally it was an anti-phsycotic for mental illness in the 60's, but turns out it treats acid reflux better, well supposedly) then i went to another who said that medicine was out of date, i actually found that the A.R. formula made it worse, so it definetlly could be the iron.
The only way your baby can get iron is to consume it. Her body can't make iron. In fact, they need MORE iron as they move out of the infant stage because they were initially born with a reserve. If she is eating other iron-rich foods, the iron in the formula may not be necessary. If you think it is the iron in the formula, you could simply try an iron-free formula for a week and see if it helps.
my son was also like this - however his iron was too low. hes 4 months old and would spit up TONS. at least 4 pukes a day in which about 3 ozs would come up each time. so i went to an apothecary here in town and talked to the pharmacist. my dr wasnt being helpful so he gave me some poweder to put in my sons bottle - its called L Glucosamine and hes only been on it for 5 days and he still pukes as many times a day, but MUCH less with each puke. its a natural safe way to help the little flap in the baby's mouth to develop quicker and it has probably already saved me half a load of laundry in 5 days! for the first time, he can wear an outfit for more than an hour at a time. its been a blessing! it was only 13.50 for one bottle (1/4 tsp per bottle) and he said chances are i'll only need the one bottle and the problem will be cleared up. correction : its L GLUTAMINE powder, sorry!
