Question:

Baking Fimo and Sculpey?

Hi, I'm new to using Fimo and Sculpey clay, so I have some questions about baking them.1I wasn't aware that their baking times and temperatures were different (Fimo - 110 C for 30 min, Sculpey - 130 C for 15 min.), so for some pieces I used both clays, either mixed or just pushed togetherWhat time/temperature combo should I use, then? 2I have a metal tray, but do I need to place the sculptures on some foil, cookie sheet, etcwhen I bake them?3I hear that some people like to boil the clay instead of baking them, which method do you prefer and why?4What's the worse that can happen if the clay is under baked/over baked?Thank you!

Answer:

polarbecause when you refer to aluminum you are simply talking about a conductor in terms of electricity.
ionic diplole dipole
Aluminium sulphide is an ionic compound, not a covalent one.So the qn of it being polar or non polar doesnt arise at all.
1You can mix your clays togetherI do it quite frequently and there are many polymer clay artists do thisI bake all of my stuff at about 250 degreesAs for how long, it depends on what I'm makingi generally stick to the 15 min for every 1/4 inch but I eyeball the thickness 2I use a metal tray but I also put a sheet of aluminum foil in the bottom of it3I have not heard of boiling clay, but I would not recommend doing it simply because of the fact that that is not how the clay was meant to be hardened, otherwise there would be directions to boil your clay on the packaging! 4If it is under baked it will be more brittleIf it is over baked it creates toxic fumesThis applies to all polymer clays 5I have never heard of sharpie being used on itThis is something you could always test by making two small pieces of clay and using it before and after and bake them bothI would assume it would work better already bakedThere may be other ways to achieve whatever it is you are trying to accomplish with the sharpiePerhaps acrylic paints would work better?
