Question:

Bedding sets vs individual bedding pieces?

I have found a couple cute crib bedding sets, cheap too. I'm undecided if I want to buy a set or buy individual pieces? I can get everything in a set for cheaper and everything will match. But, the comforter will just be decoration since it's so heavy and I'm leaning towards getting breathable bumpers instead of the thick padded ones. The skirt ruffle isn't important either. If I buy individual pieces, I want them to match. What did you do for your little one?

Answer:

I bought a bedding set- but it's rarely on the bed at the same time! I would say you are definitely fine with a mix match set and it could be fun if it all compliments each other- the way the little kids go through sheets is amazing. Especially if you want to go with a specific breathable bumper- you wouldn't need the whole bedding set- I do like the crib comforter though. My son's almost two and we don't use the comforter very much, but it does look attractive on the crib, or dangling on the side :-)
Bed sets are a 1st mom purchase. Once you do it, you won't bother to again. You will never use most of it. Bumpers are a BIG no no. Even the breathable ones are dangerous (in my opinion). Airflow is important in the crib. No matter how breathable the bumper is it still blocks the airflow around the baby's mouth. Kids don't ever use the blanket you want them to. Just make sure you have a bunch of fitted sheets and some swaddling blankets.
I purchased some sheets and fabric to make an adjustable crib skirt. I may buy a breathable bumper if I ever experience the problem with my LO getting his arms stuck. I'm on a budget (aren't we all) I couldn't fathom spending so much money on a bedding set. Can't use the comforter, not supposed to use the bumpers and the crib skirts are always so short. I plan on storing stuff under the crib and want to hide what's down there. I didn't see the point.
I bought 700 Thread count sheets that fit a 22 inch deep mattress at Sam's Club for 59.95
Just buy some cute sheets. You can't use the comforter for months (suffocation hazard) if at all. The bumpers are actually a safety hazard as well and they recommend you don't use them. Babies can get caught in them.
