Question:

Blow off valve or cold air intake?

I have an '03 vw jetta and don't know if I should get a greddy blow off valve or an injen cold air intake? Any suggestions? I don't know a lot about either, what is the difference between them?

Answer:

You aren't getting a lot of power out of a BOV. I don't mean to sound obvious or degrading if you know this but a BOV makes the pissssssss sound you hear when you wined out the turbo. It might help the turbo release some pressure and get some more power that way but besides that not much. You will spend about $250 on a blow-off value and unless you install it it's gonna cost you about $80 per hour to have someone else do it. It is about a 1 and 1/2 hour project so your looking at $370. An air intake on the other hand is what I suggest. To get a brand name it will cost about $250 but you can install that yourself in about 45 mins after figuring out that you have been reading the directions upside down for the last hour. Just kidding... It's a really easy install and it can add anywhere from 10-15hp. By the way, if you don't have a turbo Jetta there is no point to buying a blow off value because it won't do anything. Now that I think about it if you do have a turbo jetta get a DV (Diverter Valve). The nice thing about a diverter valve is that it will prevent you from losing boost which is what gives you most of your power from the turbo.
the better More reasonable choice is the cold air intake but beware if you buy one make sure it is not some cheap imitation because it will be a waste of money because it wont work properly of allowing colder air into the engine rather than sitting on top of the engine doing nothing.
a cold air intake will produce more hp and tourque while a bov will help release back pressure on a turbocharged vehicle. ive got a 1.8l turbo and i went with a cold air intake. then again i was going for more hp. also the bov will produce an awsome release of air into the atmosphere. then again if you get the air intake like i did you will hear the wastegate on your turbo make that same noise. and trust me itll make some ppl think you got major hp under the hood. so if you want the hp and the sound get the intake if you want the sound but are satisfied with the hp get the bov. intake will also help mpg's to.
well unless the jetta comes with a turbo there is no need for a BOV. the CAI would be the better choice for performance.
#1 blow off valve for a 1.8T is a bad idea(it will have to be a custom job since there is no place for you to mount it).....a diverter valve can be installed to replace the stock one, which vents the excess boost into the intake instead of the atmosphere. BOV or Diverter valve will not give you ANY noticable improvements at all on your stock car, they are used as protection on high boosted engines to prevent damaging the turbo(your vehicle's stock diverter valve does a great job at this when you're running stock boost levels). Buy the cold air intake and notice a difference in sound and performance.
