Question:

brake problem curious what you think?

HI all,My co-worker told me about his brake problem. He said his 2500 ford pickup truck‘s brakes had a tendency to stick.then he took me for a rideHe actually could push the brake pedal all the way to the floor!!! So I looked under the hood and at the master brake cyclider reseviour. It was completely empty!!I put some fluid in and discovered the rear brake caliper was leaking when he pushed in the brake pedal.I thought okaynot a big dealreplace the brake caliperyet I am worried about the damage to the overall brake system. I would fix his truck but am worried about how much damage is done to the brake system when one drives with no fluid in the master brake cyclinder reseviour.I don‘t think he drove alot on itI‘m assuming it was a slow leakbut it was empty when we drove in the parking lot. I‘m hestitant to work on it seeing how I‘m not a prowhat do you think

Answer:

replace the caliper, brake pads on both sides it should be fine
Check brakes for meat on them, if they do replace the leaking parts and fill the master cyl and continue till all the air is out of the system. It would be a good idea to have the repair manual so it can assit you from start to finish. Haynes manual if you prefer.
That would not harm the rest of the brake system, I am sure the front brakes were still working, that's how the truck was able to come to a stop. Just replace the leaking caliper ( should replace both rears for even braking ), also replace pads if getting thin, Rotors if rusted, bleed all the air out of the rear calipers and you're good to go (or stop ).
