Question:

Braking problems (2001 Olds Alero).?

My ABS light has been coming on for the past couple of weeks, and my brakes are very mushy. It takes much longer for me to stop than it should, and sometimes when I tap the brake pedal, I hear a grinding noise. I‘m thinking that there is air in my brake line, but could it also be possible that my brake system needs to be bled? Thanks!

Answer:

How many miles on your brake pads? A grinding noise could merely be caused by pads so worn out that the friction material is gone and metal is contacting metal. That would also explain longer stopping distances and perhaps a mushy pedal. The ABS light may mean several things. You might have a broken ABS sensor or sensor ring. The only way to really know what's going on would be to inspect the brakes.
ok some of the answers u got are right but not completely. first of all, aleros, grand ams, etc. are very common with abs sensors going bad, which are part of the wheel bearing. depending on pricing in your area, it could cost you about $300 per corner. depending on how many may be bad, if any. also the soft pedal and grinding noise could be due to the abs. it may not be an actual grinding noise, it could be the abs kicking in prematurely, due to sensor problems. but if in fact your pads are grinding on your rotors, it's definitely time to replace them. now if you have air in your brake system, then you may have a leak somewhere. the brake system is a sealed system. shouldn't get air just because. definitely have it checked out as soon as possible or check it yourself. the longer you wait the more money you will spend. good luck and drive safely. )
ok first things first if you hear a grinding noise when you apply you r brake pedal you have one of two problems either your friction material on your brake pads or shoes has completly worn out and you are making metal to metal contact with the rotor or drum, or you have somethign stuck in between the pad and the rotor, seeing your other symptoms i would say that you either wore your brake pads out to the point that the caliper pistons wont retract and the seals are leaking or you may have blown out a wheel cylinder but either way you wont just need to have the brakes bled you are going to need some repairs made take it to a shop and let them estimate the repairs and either pay them to do it or do it yourself
