Question:

Cable modem issues--help please?

This morning my cable modem seems to be malfunctioning...it's a Motorola SURFboard and it has a column of lights on the front (labeled Power, Receive, Send, Online, Activity, and Standby accordingly) that are all supposed to be lit up (except Standby) when I'm online. Well some of the lights keep going on and off--namely the quot;receivequot;, quot;sendquot;, and quot;onlinelights. In addition, my internet is operating very slowly and/or not at all; sometimes I get the quot;page cannot be displayedmessage when I try to navigate to another page; sometimes it goes thru ok but loads at snail's pace. Does this mean there's a problem with my computer or modem, or is it just that the internet is down in my area?

Answer:

Turn off the power to your modem and uplug it for a while. This will both allow it to reset and cool down, and will fix some minor problems. Check all of your cable connections, starting from the modem and working your way back to all other junctions. With todays digital cable systems you may want to ensure that all of your coaxial lines are magnetically shielded. If you have multiple TVs and other devices hooked up to the cable, you may need a bi-directional amplifier. The cable TV system at my apartment complex hadn't been upgraded in 25 years. By installing an amplifier I was able to overcome the signal degradation and got a notable increase in reliabilty of my internet services. If these actions don't take care of the problem, ask the cable company if they are having any issues with the cable in your area. I've had some problems with my internet and tv inthe past when the cable company was testing bandwidth prior to adding new channels and services. It seems to happen a lot with all the HD upgrades in progress.
Turn off your computer. Unplug the power cable from your cable modem and wait 4 minutes. Plug the power cable back into the cable modem. Turn on your computer. Check to see if the problem is solved. If not... call your ISP and explain what you just did to them. If power cycling the modem didn't reset the connection, it could be that your cable service is having problems in your area or that your cable modem is bad.
from your browser trying going to the address 192.168.100.1 this is commonly the address for the cable modem on a network. Going here, you may be able to determine if there are any uplink downlink problems. Do a web search of your modem and cable provider to see if your settings are what they should be. You can also reboot the modem from here.
If u manipulated the settings, i ll ask u to set it back to how it was. If u didnt do anything, then ur internet connection is down in ur area. contact ur ISP to resolve this issue ..
Ok, the send and recieve lights are supposed to flash, this is good. the connected light should be steady and the connected to pc light can flash if it wants the slow connection could be many things call your cable computer and ask them what to do if there's nothing wrong with your cable settings, run a virus check, spyware check, and adware check. possibly restore your entire pc to factory condition.
