depends on the vehicle. Lost my 'brake booster' and my brakes just did not work. Either get out the owners manual or go online and find and ask. go to your search engine, type in 'brake booster' I do not know what kind of brakes or vehicle you have-it is a neccessary part of the question.
The brake system will work without the booster, but with a substantial increase in effort. The booster is designed to give the driver a mechanical leverage so as to eliminate the leg work out in heavy traffic. Drive an older vehicle with standard brakes and you will understand real fast.
