Question:

can a non-mechanic replace a water pump?

Hi, I own a 2004 chev. venture and the water pump is getting noisy (most likely the bearings) I priced a refurbished one online at $18 and am wandering if this is a task I could handle myself, or if I'd most likely screw it up

Answer:

I don't work on cars, but my dad does. It seems like a water pump would be just as easy to replace as an alternator. Remove, replace, reattach hoses and/or belts. Get one of the repair manuals for your car from the auto store; that will walk you through it.
Unless you have a lot of experience doing mechanical repairs this is not a job for amateurs in most cases. I am not familiar with the engine in question but unless it is a bolt on external unit I would pay someone to install it.
Te ASE will HUNT YOU DOWN, they are not an organization to trifle with! Seriously, it all depends on your degree of mechanical ability, and the info source you will use to do the job. If you go out and purchase a repair manual for your vehicle, then I would say yes, you can do that job yourself.
