Question:

can anyone explain what bios is and where it comes from, does it have something to do with the bootsrap loader

well im asking alot of questions about the bios mode / bootsrap loader coz, my bios, doesnt work, when i press f8 it goes to that menu with safe mode in it, but it freezes, and i cant select safe mode.... anyhelp, in explaining this, and how i can fix it.thnx

Answer:

First of all if you got to that screen by pressing F8 then your BIOS is working. There is definitely something going on if your PC is freezing when you get to that screen. There is really no way around it without using your restore disks to reinstall windows. It could be that your hard drive is bad or your power supply or RAM is bad. However, your BIOS is the least of your worries. I would try to reinstall windows and see if you can get that far first. If so you will have to continue with this option to get your PC back!
I would first make sure it is not your operating system that is corrupted. It sounds like you are getting into your windows system. If that is the case your bios is working. BIOS, in computing, stands for Basic Input/Output System also incorrectly known as Basic Integrated Operating System. BIOS refers to the firmware code run by an IBM compatible PC when first powered on. The primary function of the BIOS is to prepare the machine so other software programs stored on various media (such as hard drives, floppies, and CDs) can load, execute, and assume control of the PC. It sounds as though your bios chip is bad or you may simply need to re-install the firmware. Depending on the maker of the computer you should be able to go onto their support site and download an update. You will copy it either onto a floppy disk or CD depending up your computer having a floppy drive or not. Then start the computer with that drive and it should take you through a menu to upgrade your bios firmware. Hit my name and email me if you need any help finding the file. Good Luck
BIOS=Basic In/OUT System. It's software on a chip on the motherboard. Settings can be changed, but If it's fried, your computer becomes unusable and needs to be trashed. Bootstrap loader and the other problems you are describing sound more like operating system problems. This kind of problem can usually be solved by backing up files (remove the hard drive and put it into another computer as a slave or external drive if necessary for backup). Then put it back into your computer and reformat and reinstall OS and all updates. If this doesn't make sense to you, try to get someone with a little experience to help you. It's not rocket science, but it can get a little tricky.
Without going into a lot of details, what you're describing is the startup behavior of Windows, not the BIOS. Pressing F8 is the way to bring up the Windows Boot Menu, which gives options as to how to boot the system. If you don't press F8 Windows should start normally. If it doesn't, and if the Boot Menu isn't functioning properly, then you've trashed some of the initial boot functions of Windows. I don't have that screen up right now, but you may be able to rescue things by putting the Windows installation CD into your CD-ROM drive, changing the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD-ROM drive is checked first, and then use the Windows repair function on the CD to try and repair things...but don't hold out much hope.
Hmmm... okorder /... The fact that your computer turns on, displays video and attempts to boot into windows tells me that your BIOS works just fine. If your BIOS didn't work, the computer would not display any video, it would not complete the POST routine. It would not even come close to letting you boot into windows.
