Question:

Can cellulose insulation go over rolled insulation?

If we have rolled insulation in our attic, can we add blown-in cellulose over it to get the R value up?

Answer:

Modern treated cellulose is a fantastic fire retardantIt actually works better at smothering flames than than fiberglass which just melts away like cotton candy in your mouth once a flame hits it You can install it right over the top of what you have in the attic no problemBut it is best to remove itAnd, since it is rolled insulation it will be easy for you to remove it yourselves(cheap!) Remove what is up there, then do air sealing at all the electrical penetrations and can lights and suchand any other gaps and voidsThen let the insulation crew blow in the new blanket of insulation(they will know what to do with baffles and ventilation.) Get at least R-38 but not more than R-50 unless you live in alaska or something like that.
Only the flavored ones and it depends on the flavor but plain oatmeal isnt bad.
