Question:

Can I drive my truck or do I have to tow if the water pump is going out.?

I think the water pump is going out in my truck can I still drive it short distance if I put water in it first?

Answer:

You might be able to drive short distances. but if you rev the engine it might go out. to be safe i would to it. if it still works and hasent went out on you yet than you might be able to drive it. Good Luck
If the temperature gauge is working and the water isnt leaking and its full just drive it no more than 10 minutes at a time or until the temperature gauge reads hot then let it cool off and repeat. DO NOT POUR COLD WATER IN A HOT MOTOR, you will crack the heads!
Just make sure ur truck dont run hot. What I would/have done is put water in it then while u drive if the temp starts goin up pull over.
Depends on how bad the water pump is. Is it getting really hot already? Is it leaking water really bad? Answer yes to either one of these and you would probably be best to get it towed to the shop. Most vehicles now have aluminum heads, and over-heating the engine can easily lead to a warped head. That is going to be a whole lot more expensive to fix than what it would cost for a tow. If it holds water and doesn't get too hot, give it a try if it's a short distance, just keep an eye on the temperature gauge. Pull over before it gets into the red zone.
