Question:

Can I legally start a small camp fire in woods?

In Alaska, it‘s a bit chilly, and I want to enjoy some nature. Behind my house, there are tens of thousands of acres -- all government owned. Would it be legal to start a small camp fire? I know state parks have size restriction of the fire pit, but what about raw, undeveloped land? If it matters, I‘m 17 -- don‘t have much knowledge in this.

Answer:

Even if it is undeveloped , the government owns it. You can probably just ask your local fire department if you have one.
Small fires in forests even with a properly constructed fire pit and water on stand by. Have a nasty habit of becoming large wild fires that destroy thousand of acres of forest and kill wild life and fire fighters! So leave your interest for pyrotechnics at home and take a camp stove with you along with warm clothing!
The National forest service regulates most of Alaska, they have fire regulations that change with the seasons sometimes a permit is needed in order to have a campfire. Sometimes there is a blanket ban on any fire use such as during the very dry season. So the person or place to ask is your local forest ranger.
