Question:

Can I Paint A Black Leather Sofa White?

I got a black leather sofa that's brand new. I don't like the color and I want to paint it white. Is this possible? If so, how?.

Answer:

As a seamstress who is well versed with all types of fabric textiles, I can tell you that painting leather furniture will not be a successful idea and any notion of doing so should be dismissed. Paint applied to leather will not adhere as the leather expands and contracts due to changing temperatures and humidity levels. Leather will also stretch with use.

How To Paint Leather Furniture
Black Leather Paint
It is perfectly possible to change a leather from black to white but not adviseable. Generally speaking black leather (unless it is an aniline style leather) has been created by dyeing and then pigmenting with a coat of special flexible pigment (paint) This is the way colours are created in leather. You cannot dye a leather that has been pigment coated you can only 'repaint' the colour. A job like this should be left to professional leather specialists who will have the correct products and methods to do the job and it is not cheap. If the leather is brand new the results should be very good as the leather is in good condition but going from black to white will always be problematic from a coverage point of view. This is definitely not a DIY job and although there are companies willing to sell you the products on the internet I would not recommend them as they are cheap products that will not last and then your sofa will be ruined. Hope this helps
