Question:

Can I run electrical wire outside of drywall?

I have an unfinished basement with a drywall ceiling. I will be running 12/2 electrical wire about 25 feet across the basement to the breaker box. Can I run the electrical wire on the outside of the drywall and staple it in place? I don't feel like fishing the wire through the ceiling.

Answer:

There is a way out of this. It is called Mc Cable. (sometimes called BX) Lowe's has it for sell by the foot. It meets the NEC for protection against physical damage requirement. 1 hole straps will ensure that proper supports is in place. Just be sure that you use the red plastic inserts at every attachment of every box. Good luck! ps. BE EXTRA CAREFUL OF CUTTING THE STEEL SHEATHING OFF THE WIRE.
It's not that much work to fish it through. Really, it's not. And then it will be done the right way. Outside the drywall and stapled up isn't legal by me and probably isn't near you either.

You can staple it to your ceiling. If your house burns down your insurance will not cover it. If somebody gets hurt your insurance will not cover it. You will never be able to sell the house like that. If it gets caught by an inspector you will have to pay an electrician to fix it. They won't sign off if you try to fix it yourself. It will need so to be in conduit. So instead of fishing it through the ceiling you can fish it through the conduit. Do it right the first time and you won't have to hire and electrician. You are not going to feel like fishing the wire through the ceiling the day you fail the inspecion and are not allowed to sell your house either. Oh I forgot the inspector will require a licensed electrician to fix that on your tab $$$$$$$$$$.
