Question:

Can I substitute a cake decor tube for a plastic sandwich bag?

I have the heads for the cake decors, but I dont have the tube I think thats what you call it. Could I just use a plastic sandwich bag and tie it on with rubber bands. Will this work? or will it just make a mess? Thank you.

Answer:

I think you mean a pastry bag... the tubes are the extensions that make the shape. If you don't have a pastry bag, use parchment paper. Just fold it into a cone and fold the top inside the cone so it doesn't open up. Shove the tube inside and you got a disposable pastry bag. Pour contents into the cone using a spoon and twist the bag closed. Make sure it's closed well so contents don't spill outside. You can fold it to any size, big or small, to pipe large objects or small fine detail.
I have tried to do this several times. I am always hopeful that it will work. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. In general, your icing can't be too thick, and your pressure on the bag can't be too heavy, or the bag breaks and you end up with a gloppy mess. It is also important to note that the cheaper the quality of the bag, the more likely you are to break it. If you take your time, and practice on a piece of wax paper (or similar) prior to starting on the cake, I think you will be able to do it. Especially if you have experience decorating cakes! Best of luck!
The sandwich bag wont work well and how are you going to put the things on there? its impossible.
Umm I have use a sandwhich bag before.... Just cut off one of the corners of the sandwhich bad and fill it and it should work. At least it did for me...
