Question:

Can I usa a regular sewing machine and sew on polyester/rayon?

I have a maxi dress that I would love to cut off shorter, but I don‘t have a serger. Is it still possible or would it make the dress look homemade?

Answer:

No problem. Be sure to use a size 12 needle and polyester thread. Use a press cloth (old pillowcase or a piece of sheet).
If I were you, I'd hand hem it after cutting it two inches or so longer than you wish to wear it. A regular sewing machine doesn't usually have a hem stitch on it. The hemstitch is just a whipped stitch. Fold under about ? and press it in place, then try on the dress. Have someone fold the hem under about 1? to 2 inches, then press that all the way around. Pin the hem in place, matching the side and back seams. Make your whip stitches about every inch to two and it won't take long at all.
