Question:

Can i use my lcd monitor as a tv screen for computer games?

I have an lcd screen but its not high definition, i know the new high definition monitors have the three jacks at the back for sound and picture like a TV and you can run playstation's and what not through them, mine being older obviously does not. I don't have the money or space for a new tv or Monitor, so im wondering if an add on exists? an extra cable that will add some jacks to my current monitor. Please tell me if there is and what its called. Thanks

Answer:

Yes all around but how all depends on what connections your monitor has. If it only has a blue D-Sub connection, then it must be connect to a PC first. Then you can install a TV tuner, most of which also have a connection for composite, and component video. If it has DVI or HDMI you can use the above method or hook it to any HD cable box or HD terrestrial tuner with either DVI or HDMI. They use the same video signal so if one has HDMI and the other has DVI, you can simply get an HDMI to DVI cable or adapter. Some monitors come with component connections(Green, blue, and red) and this can simply be hooked to a cable box or HD terrestrial tuner.
Certainly you can. I'll bet you any money that it technically IS high-definition. 720p is high-definition, and that's 1280x720. A number of 720p HDTVs have 1024x768 resolution, which also happens to be a resolution common on entry-level non-widescreen LCD monitors. What you mean is it isn't FULL-HD, or 1080p (1920x1080). But that's okay. You can connect a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 to a monitor with DVI or HDMI input by using a HDMI cable or HDMI-to-DVI cable as appropriate. The Sega Dreamcast and Xbox 360 also have VGA cables available, which can be connected to almost any monitor (most monitors have VGA input). PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii GameCube, and Xbox would be trickier, (any console earlier than those would be trickier yet) and in those cases you would definitely be better off just hooking up to your TV. One other important thing I should mention is that you CAN hook these up to your TV, even if you do not have any video inputs on your TV. You will need a RF modulator, which will convert the audio and video of the video game to a signal your TV can pick up by tuning to channel 3 (or 4). You can purchase a RF modulator online or in a number of retail stores; alternatively, a VCR with a built-in tuner will work as well, connect the video game to the LINE IN on the VCR, connect the OUT TO TV cable jack to the TV's antenna/cable input, and connect your cable/antenna to the IN FROM ANTENNA cable jack on your VCR.
