Question:

Can plastics biodegrade?

Can plastics biodegrade?

Answer:

very confusing point. try searching with yahoo or google. that can assist!
Yes, but very slowly. The floating trash pile in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii is mostly plastic bottles, and isn't expected to degrade for decades. Sad.
eventually they will but it takes an awful long time. Though you may have noticed that if you leave a plastic bottle out in the sun for long enough it will start to crack very easily - this is UV degrading the plastic. In alot of cases UV will start to degrade plastic partly but not fully. There is now a movement on biodegradable plastics for things like packaging like biodegradable shopping bags and carrot bags etc.
