Answer:

Hi: The key to germinating Basil or any other herbs or flowers is the the potting soil and light requirement. I have grown thousands of herbs from seeds. Purchase a light weight potting soil with no bark. Add some vermiculite and some humus to the soil. Add hot tap water and mix with the soil. The hot water is great for the roots to become established. Make sure you water regularly but don't over water. Basil does best if it is germinated in darkness. Some herbs will do better in light and others in the dark. I will link you to the spices and herb section of my website. There is a page on growning herbs from seeds that may give you additional information. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other articles, tips or techniques that may be useful to you. If you need further suggestions, please feel free to contact me. Good luck with your Basil and have a great day! Kimberly www.landscape-solutions-for-you.c. www.landscape-solutions-for-you.c.
To get a lush basil plant, instead of a straggly one, all you need to do is to pinch out the growing tips frequently. That will make your plant produce more branches and more leaves. Basil is fairly easy to grow from seed. It demands full sun and a bit of moisture in the beginning. To give the seedlings a head start give them regular doses of liquid fertilizer that's recommended for green leafy plants. Or just put some (3-4 handfuls) well rotted manure or compost in a bucket of water. Stir it everyday. Water your plants with this water, they will smile at you.
Plant seeds in egg cartons, cover with plastic wrap, punch holes in the wrap. Spray water ever day. (Leave in a warm position for 70% of the day. When the seedlings emerge plant them in a warm spot in the garden, at least 4 hours sunligtht a day and keep well watered and feed it heaps with liquid furtiliser, the more you pick the bigger and better it will grow.
