Question:

Can someone tell me where to buy White Portland Cement?

I'm looking for a place to buy white portland cement, in small amounts, like around 100-200 pounds. I've looked at all the local hardware stores and can't seem to find anything but grey and I need white. thanks

Answer:

White cement is actually an additive added to grey. You local hardware/lumber yards should carry cement colors

In the 1820s, Aspdin’s quest for a manufactured counterpart to natural or Roman cement (derived from volcanic ash and other naturally occurring minerals) led to his discovery and patent of portland cement. Aspdin’s name for his invention served two purposes. It distinguished the material from Roman cement, which existed for centuries. It also was a marketing ploy. Concrete made from his new cement resembled a highly prized building stone quarried on the Isle of Portland.
White Portland Cement
It is incorrect to say that there is not actually White Cement and that it is an additive like in colored concrete. White Cement is just hard to find because it is uncommon. The chances that your local ready mix producer would have it in his silo is almost none. When they have to use it they have to get in in bags but since they are typically running at least 470 lbs a yard they buy it by the pallet. You might ask them who they get it from and then see if they would give you a number since you will only need a few bags. They might be happy to so they don't have to deal with it and then you can contact the cement producer or broker.
