Question:

Can you lay new carpet over old carpet?

Can you lay new carpet over old carpet. Because of my age and health it is not possible for me to rip out the old; but I would like to lay down some new to freshen up my computer room.

Answer:

No you can t put wall to wall carpet and have it not effect the lower carpet because on the installation needed. But small area rugs and larger rugs can be used and then taken with you as you move. Special thin pads are used to help prevent the top rugs from moving and wrinkling. These to can be taken with you w/o harming the original carpet. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. Loose-laying new carpet over old carpet could cause several problems. First, the carpet could shift if it's just laid in over the old carpet and not secured down by stretching it over tackstrip. Also, having carpet pad and two layers of carpet laid on top of each other will increase the height of your floor substantially, which may cause you to have problems opening and closing doors into that room. It will also make the flooring in that room noticeably higher than that in the surrounding rooms. Finally, you stated in your question that due to age and health reasons you can't rip out the old carpet. If you're unable to rip out the old installation, I doubt that installing new carpet would be a good idea, since even a single room's worth of carpeting is very heavy, and installing it, even as loose-lay over existing flooring would require moving all of the furniture out of the room. If you're going to go that far, you should probably just hire someone to rip out the old carpet, install the new, and do it properly.
For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/axjTQ People put throw (small) rugs on top of carpeting all the time. Be sure you vacuum the old carpet first and it is laying flat with no wrinkles. That will help your new rug stay cleaner and not show wear lines.
Well I wouldn't advise it since all of the lingering oder or stench will come up through the old carpet. I would advise that you strip the old to the bare wood and clean the wood up and then lay the new carpet. If you can not do this have someone do it for you if you can afford it.
